What is a Primary Election?

Judge

Everyone can vote on nonpartisan races, like Judge of the Supreme Court.

Political party

In Oregon, the major parties are the Democratic Party, Independent Party, and Republican Party. These parties use the Primary Election to nominate their party candidates for the May 15 Primary Election. The major parties can choose a “closed system”: only the registered voters in that party can vote for candidates of the same party.
Or, they can choose an “open system”: the party lets registered voters who are not registered with any party vote in their Primary Election.

  • The Independent Party has opened its Primary Election. This means:
  1. If you are registered with the Independent Party, you can vote for Independent Party candidates and nonpartisan candidates. You cannot vote for a candidate from any other party in the Primary Election.
  2. If you are not a member of a party, you can vote for Independent Party candidates and nonpartisan candidates, but you must ask for an Independent Party ballot by 5:00 pm on April 24. Contact your county elections office.

  • The Democratic Party primary is closed. If you are registered with the Democratic Party, you can vote for Democratic Party candidates and nonpartisan candidates. You cannot vote for a candidate from any other party in the Primary Election.

  • The Republican Party primary is closed. If you are registered with the Republican Party, you can vote for Republican Party candidates and nonpartisan candidates. You cannot vote for a candidate from any other party in the Primary Election.
